Operational forces are prepared

The European Football Championship will open in Germany on 14 June 2024, with the first of three group matches kicking off in Leipzig on 18 June, as well as a Round of 16 match. Since the start of planning for the UEFA EURO 2024 event concept, there has been a close exchange between all authorities and organisations on the subject of security.

The blocking circuit around the stadium, which has already been successfully implemented in Leipzig in the run-up to concerts and football matches, will be significantly extended on the four match days and the Residents' Protection Zone will be set up at 4pm, five hours before kick-off. Access will then be restricted to residents and staff, including service providers such as care services, tradespeople and taxis, or those with a proven legitimate interest. There is a detailed security plan in place specifically for the city centre, including vehicle barriers and mobile barriers (indutainers). Drones may not be flown or carried within a 3.7km radius of the stadium on match days in Leipzig.

Leipzig celebrates the fan fest on Augustusplatz, where up to 15,000 people can share in the excitement during the matches. Over 30 regional, national and international artists and bands will perform throughout the tournament. The security concept developed in co-operation with all partners ranges from fire protection to event security and rescue services. There will be general security checks at the entrance to the guarded area.

The security concept, developed in cooperation with all partners, covers everything from fire protection to event security and rescue services. ‘Based on the current state of knowledge, we do not see any increased risk potential for the matches in Leipzig,’ said Chief of Police René Demmler. The police presence will depend on the situation at the time. ‘Of course, it is guaranteed at all times that we can react quickly to current changes in order to guarantee the safety of the population and visitors, the teams and officials,’ said Demmler.

The fire service's plans are based on standardised nationwide hazard scenarios and protection goals. This results, among other things, in additional flexible units that are available for special operations. Supporting units from Saxony, Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt will be deployed to ensure that the necessary forces and resources are available depending on the risk assessment. The information and involvement of neighbouring and cooperating institutions and a repeatedly practised, staff-based monitoring of these measures round off the prevention measures. ‘We are therefore well prepared and are looking forward to finally getting started,’ says Axel Schuh, Head of the Fire Department.
