The term child pornography (sometimes shortened to child porn or abbreviated as CP) characterises any unlawful sexual activity with children. There are various definitions of that term depending on different interpretation of the terms child and pornography. Mostly it refers to photo and video material. In some countries, e.g. Germany even drawings, paintings, illustrations and literature may be prohibited.
How to report child pornography to the police...
If you detect an internet site showing CP content accidentally and you want to report it online:
- As soon as possible inform the nearest police station or the respective Office of State Criminal Investigation online and tell them the address of that site. Delete the cache in your browser.
If you have found a CP in a newsgroup and you want to report it via internet:
- Take the name of the newsgroup down, its reference and perhaps its number and author. Inform the the nearest police station or the respective Office of State Criminal Investigation online.
If you have been sent a CP photo- or video file in an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) and you want to report it online:
- Do a so called "whois or .dns" query and send this result as well the protocol including the photos immediately online to the nearest police station or the respective Office of State Criminal Investigation who can identify the IP.
If you downloaded a CP photo or video file using a file sharing program by mistake and you want to report it online:
- The experienced internet user is expected to find out the IP of the PC where the file is from. Inform your local police station as soon as possible so that they can start securing evidence immediately.
- Restrict the selection of filetypes before you search for them.
If you have been sent e-mails showing CP content and you want to report it online:
- Send the e-mail including its attachments to the nearest police station or the respective Office of State Criminal Investigation and delete the message from your hard drive.
Inform only one police station in case of any suspicion and do not e-mail other users to report it. Do not investigate yourself and avoid any personal research. In order to avoid any prosecution the internet user is supposed neither to open nor to execute and store files showing CP content.
